Course Content

Geography gives students the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills they will need to tackle the social and environmental problems faced by the UK and the world in the 21st Century. The course looks at both UK and global geography, understanding how the physical and human world interact and asks students to make geographical decisions.

1. Global Geographical Issues:

Topic 1: Hazardous Earth

Topic 2: Development dynamics

Topic 3: Challenges of an urbanising world

2. UK Geographical Issues:

Topic 4: The UK’s evolving physical landscape

Topic 5: The UK’s evolving human landscape

Topic 6: Geographical investigations – including one physical fieldwork investigation and one human fieldwork investigation linked to Topics 4 and 5.

3. People and Environmental Issues - Making Geographical Decisions:

Topic 7: People and the biosphere

Topic 8: Forests under threat

Topic 9: Consuming energy resources

Fieldwork

Students will carry out 2 fieldwork investigations, in contrasting physical and human environments.

This will give students the opportunity to study geography away from the classroom and in the real world.

How is this course assessed?

There will be 3 exams at the end of Year 11, 1hr  30mins each.

Exam 1: Global Geographical Issues (37.5%)

Exam 2: UK Geographical Issues (37.5%)

Exam 3: People and Environment Issues – Making Geographical Decisions (25%)

Where will this course take me?

Students can go on to study A level Geography at Ashby School, providing they meet the Sixth Form entry requirements.

Many colleges offer BTEC qualifications in Travel & Tourism.

Students can then go on to study a wide variety of Geography-based degree courses at university, such as:

· Geography

· Geology

· Environmental Science

· Social Science

Studying Geography develops knowledge and skills that can lead to a range of careers including town planning, transport planning, travel journalism, coastal engineering, international aid planning, meteorology, cartography, environmental consulting, surveying, social research, pollution analyst, disaster management, development worker, sustainability consultant and many more!
